“Wanderers Welcome” is an important tagline in “Wanderers Welcome” is an important tagline in Mississippi’s tourism industry. This idea is perfectly embodied by the music of singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett!🎸🍹☀️

Buffett was born in Pascagoula, MS in 1946 and graduated in 1969 from USM in Hattiesburg with a history degree. It was here where he started his first band with a fellow student, and soon after a fateful 1971 trip to Key West, FL—back then an outpost for artists, con-men, and other “free spirit” types—inspired Buffett to tell the stories of outcasts, drifters, and wanderers in his music. ⛵️🏝️

Buffett reached national fame in 1977 with his hit “Margaritaville,” about escapism and life in the tropics. Now 76, Buffett has 27 studio albums; multiple bestselling books; Broadway, movie, and TV appearances; Grammy nominations; and Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association awards to his name.

Ever-searching for a new story to tell through song, Buffett has been touring since 1974, popping up anywhere from small beach bars or on stage for thousands of ‘Parrotheads,’ his most loyal fans.🦜☀️

Mississippi became a major theater of struggle dur Mississippi became a major theater of struggle during the Civil Rights Movement. On MLK Jr. Day, I want to highlight some of the Mississippians who helped lead others in the fight for equality.⚖️

🪧🎙️Medgar Evers (Decatur), field secretary for the NAACP, led demonstrations against Jim Crow segregation and sought to recruit Mississippi’s young people to join the struggle.

🗳️Fannie Lou Hamer (Montgomery County) co-founded the MS Freedom Democratic Party—among other acts—to fight for Black Mississippians’ voting rights.

🏛️James Meredith (Kosciusko) was the first Black student to attend the University of Mississippi—a major step in desegregating public education in the South.

If you’re in the Jackson area today, the Two Mississippi Museums are offering free admission to honor King’s legacy and that of those who fought for the rights of Black Americans in our state. 🎟️

This January, I’ll be highlighting famous Missis This January, I’ll be highlighting famous Mississippians. Today’s feature is TV broadcaster Robin Roberts!☀️☕️🎙️

Robin René Roberts grew up in Pass Christian, MS and began her broadcasting career in Hattiesburg with WDAM. From there, she relocated to Biloxi; to Nashville; then to Atlanta. She became the first Black female anchor on ESPN’s SportsCenter in 1990 and has been a coanchor on ABC’s Good Morning America since 2005.

Having battled breast cancer and a rare bone marrow disorder, Roberts spends time raising awareness of breast cancer and bone marrow transplants. Her work has helped increase the number of bone marrow donors registered with nonprofit Be The Match.

It’s so cool to turn on one of the nation’s biggest talk programs and see a Mississippian at the table! 🎥🎙️
